Areas we cover
BS7
Edwardian family terraces backing onto one of the longest runs of independent shops in the country. Which means that in BS7, a domestic drain and a commercial kitchen are often closer relatives than anyone realises.

Local knowledge
BS7 is mostly Edwardian — built a decade or two later than Redland, more uniformly, and for families rather than for division into flats. The housing itself is some of the most straightforward drainage in Bristol. What makes it interesting is what those houses back onto.
Gloucester Road carries an extraordinary density of independent cafés, delis, bakeries, takeaways and pubs, and the terraced streets run directly off it on both sides. In a lot of cases the houses immediately behind a parade of shops share drainage boundaries with them, or feed into the same downstream run.
The consequence is one we get called out to constantly and that catches people completely off guard: a household drain blocks with grease that never came from that household’s kitchen. A domestic run simply isn’t built for commercial fat volumes, and when a fat line establishes itself downstream, the houses upstream find out first.
“If you’re in a house behind Gloucester Road and your drain has blocked with fat, don’t assume it’s yours. On these streets, quite often it isn’t — and that changes who should be paying.”
— Anthony Lord, Flow Sure Drains
It’s worth knowing where you stand on this. If the run serves more than one property — and a domestic terrace plus a commercial unit is certainly more than one — it’s likely a shared lateral drain, which normally makes it Wessex Water’s responsibility rather than yours. Where a specific business is repeatedly causing it, that’s a separate conversation, and one where camera footage is worth considerably more than an argument.
We work for both sides of that fence in BS7 — the households and the businesses — and we’ll tell either what we find without dressing it up.
Away from the main road, Bishopston is family housing, and the drainage problems reflect that. Around Bishop Road and the streets near the schools, the everyday call-outs are wipes, nappy liners and the occasional item posted down a toilet by someone under five.
None of it is unusual and most of it is quickly dealt with. It does mean the single most useful preventative thing in this postcode is a bin in the bathroom and a rule that only three things go down a toilet.
The Edwardian terraces here are generally kinder to work on than Redland’s Victorian stock. The runs are slightly later, often better laid, and rear access is available on many streets. Root damage still happens where mature trees line a road, but displaced joints are less routine than they are a mile west.
Where BS7 does spring surprises is on the streets that have been extended heavily — the same build-over problems as Bedminster, though less widespread.
Blocked drain in BS6?
Housing stock
The problems divide fairly cleanly along these lines.
c.1900–1915
Uniform, well-built, generally straightforward pipework with rear access on many streets. Blockages are usually about what’s gone down rather than what’s wrong with the pipe.
Watch for: wipes — the commonest call-out in this postcode
Shared boundaries
Domestic runs sharing drainage boundaries with commercial kitchens. The house blocks; the fat came from next door’s fryer. More common here than anywhere else we work.
Watch for: heavy grease in a household with no obvious source
Shop units, modern kitchens
Commercial kitchens in Edwardian shop units that were built for retail, not catering. Small premises, high volume, and drainage shared with the residents behind.
Watch for: a complaint from the house behind before you notice anything

BISHOPSTON QUESTION
If you’re in a house behind Gloucester Road, quite possibly a commercial kitchen. Domestic runs on these streets frequently share drainage boundaries with the shops in front of them, and a household drain is not built for commercial fat volumes.
Don’t assume the bill is automatically yours. If the run serves more than one property it’s likely a shared lateral drain, which is normally Wessex Water’s responsibility. We’ll trace what it serves and tell you before you pay for anything. More on drain responsibility.
You need evidence before you need an argument. A CCTV survey establishes what the run serves, where the build-up sits and which direction it’s coming from, and you keep the footage.
With that in hand you have something concrete to take to Wessex Water, the business, or the council’s environmental health team. Without it, it’s one person’s word against another’s.
A busy café or takeaway typically every three months, a pub kitchen every six. On this stretch it matters more than usual because your run is often shared with the residents behind you — a blockage becomes their problem as fast as it becomes yours.
Scheduled jetting costs a fraction of an emergency call-out, and it happens before you open rather than mid-service. Commercial contracts.
Family housing, busy bathrooms, and wipes. Nappy liners, baby wipes and cleaning wipes are the commonest thing we pull out of drains in this part of BS7, and none of them break down the way toilet paper does.
A bin in the bathroom prevents most of it.
Usually the same day. BS7 sits between two areas we’re in constantly, so we’re often nearby already. You’ll get a realistic arrival window when you call — [2 to 4 hours] in most cases.
Slightly newer and generally better behaved. Bishopston is mostly Edwardian rather than Victorian, the runs tend to be better laid, and displaced joints are less routine than a mile west in Redland.
Root damage still happens where mature trees line a street, and heavily extended houses bring their own problems — but the base stock is kinder to work on.
On many BS7 streets, yes — rear access is available on a good number of them. Where it isn’t, we come through and sheet the floors as standard, with boot covers on.
Yes. This page covers BS7 broadly — Bishopston, Horfield, Ashly Park and the streets between them. We’re also regularly in Clifton and Bishopston either side.
Tell us your postcode, what the drain is doing, and whether you back onto Gloucester Road. That last detail changes what we expect to find — and sometimes who ends up paying for it.
