Areas we cover
BS6
We’re in BS6 most weeks. It’s Victorian clay pipework, shared runs between converted flats, and roots from some of the best-treed streets in Bristol — so we know what we’re likely to find before we arrive.

Local knowledge
Redland is largely Victorian and Edwardian, and the drainage reflects it. Almost everything we attend here runs on jointed salt-glazed clay laid well over a century ago — and a high proportion of the larger houses have since been divided into flats.
That combination produces two recurring problems, and between them they account for most of what we’re called out to in BS6.
Where one house has become three or four flats, several kitchens and bathrooms feed a single original drain that was never designed for that load. Grease from multiple kitchens builds up faster than it would in a family home, and when it blocks it affects everyone at once.
It also raises a question of responsibility worth understanding before anyone pays for anything. If the run serves more than one property, it may be a shared lateral drain and Wessex Water’s responsibility rather than yours — and on a converted terrace that’s far more often the case than people assume.
“If your neighbours in the same building have the problem at the same time, it is rarely a private drain. That’s worth establishing before anyone gets an invoice.”
— Anthony Lord, Flow Sure Drains
Redland’s streets are well treed, and mature roots find jointed clay pipework easily. They enter at a joint looking for moisture, then thicken and force it apart. We cut them back mechanically, but where roots have displaced the joint, cutting alone only buys time — the opening is still there next season.
A camera survey shows whether you’re dealing with an intrusion that will regrow or a joint that needs patching or lining. On the terraces around Redland Green and Cranbrook Road that distinction is usually what decides whether a drain gets fixed or just cleared again in eighteen months.
Terraces here frequently have no side access, which means bringing equipment through the property. We sheet floors and use boot covers as standard — it isn’t an extra and we don’t need asking.
Most of BS6 is also a residents’ parking zone. It rarely delays us, but if there’s a loading restriction outside your property it’s worth mentioning when you call so we can plan around it rather than discover it on arrival.
Blocked drain in BS6?
Housing stock
What we bring to a job in Redland depends mostly on what sort of building it is.
c.1870–1900
Long rear runs to a shared boundary, jointed clay throughout, and frequently no side access. Roots and displaced joints are the usual finding.
Converted 1970s onward
Three or four kitchens on one original run. Grease builds faster, blockages affect everyone, and responsibility is often shared rather than private.
Watch for: several flats reporting slow drains in the same week
Mixed era, high occupancy
Heavy, concentrated use and a lot of wipes. Blockages cluster at the start of term and around changeover, and landlords usually want it dealt with without being there.
Watch for: repeat blockages in the same term — worth a survey
Coverage
We work right across BS6 and the streets either side of it. This is roughly where our Redland work clusters.

Anonymised, but real. This is the kind of thing we’re called to in BS6 and how it usually goes.

What we do here
Everything we offer across Bristol is available in BS6, but these are the ones we’re called out for most on this side of the city.

Redland questions
Almost certainly not yours alone. If a run serves more than one property it’s likely a shared lateral drain, and in this area that’s normally Wessex Water’s responsibility rather than the residents’.
This comes up constantly in Redland because so many of the larger houses have been divided. We’ll trace what the run actually serves and tell you before you pay for anything — including when the answer is that you should be calling Wessex Water instead of us. More on drain responsibility.
Usually not. Roots are cut back mechanically first, and where they’ve displaced a joint the section can nearly always be repaired from inside the pipe with a patch or a liner — no trench, no reinstatement.
Excavation is a last resort, for genuine collapses or pipes that have lost their shape. We’d show you the footage that justifies it before proposing it. More on no-dig repairs.
Yes. A lot of Redland terraces have no side gate, so bringing hose and rods through the property is routine for us. Floors are sheeted and boot covers go on as standard — it isn’t an extra and you don’t need to ask.
Usually the same day, and BS6 is one of the areas we’re in most often. You’ll be given a realistic arrival window when you call — [2 to 4 hours] in most cases — rather than an optimistic one.
Rarely, but it’s worth a mention. Most of BS6 is a residents’ parking zone and some streets have loading restrictions. If there’s one directly outside your property, tell us when you call and we’ll plan around it rather than discover it on arrival.
On this housing stock it’s usually one of two things. Either roots have entered a clay joint and are regrowing after each clearance, or several kitchens share the run and grease is rebuilding faster than one household would produce it.
Both are visible on camera and neither is fixed by clearing it again. If it’s happened more than twice in the same place, a survey is cheaper than a third clearance.
Yes — there’s a lot of rented and student accommodation in BS6 and much of our work here is for landlords and agents. We can attend and invoice without you needing to be on site, and provide a written report after each visit.
For HMOs with recurring problems, scheduled maintenance costs considerably less than repeat emergency call-outs.
Yes. This page covers BS6 as a whole — Redland, Cotham, Westbury Park and the streets between them. We’re also regularly in Clifton and Bishopston either side.
Tell us your postcode and what the drain is doing — and whether anyone else in the building has the same problem. That last one matters more than people expect.
